Let’s use our knowledge of children’s brains (and brains in general!).
Meltdowns mean cortisol levels have risen and shut down the part of the brain that thinks logically. The fearful, alarmed network of the brain has become so highly activated that it has taken over. Hence, our first step is always to soothe and calm our child, so that their thinking brain has a chance to come online again.
In other words, the best response to a meltdown is always to co-regulate our children, before we try to explain the boundaries and limits.
